In the late 80s, Brian Dunn spent 5 years abroad building farms in developing countries, cultivating his passion for beer. Upon returning to Colorado, he began homebrewing and pursued graduate studies. In 1993, in a nascent Denver beer scene, he embarked on founding what would become one of America’s most acclaimed craft breweries. Starting with a marketing study and a business plan, he seized an opportunity in Denver’s emerging Ballpark Neighborhood with a goal of brewing distinctive, well-balanced beers. With financial support from family, friends, and a loan from the City of Denver, his dream of commercial brewing became a reality in 1994. Since then, Great Divide has gone on to become one of the most decorated breweries in America, recognized for having brewed some of the globe’s most balanced yet assertive and flavorful beers. These beers have landed an impressive amount of acclaim, earning 19 Great American Beer Festival Medals, 5 World Beer Cup Awards, and 14 spots on Beer Advocate’s “Top Rated Beers: Colorado”. Great Divide also has a a taproom at DIA and a brewpub in Castle Rock . Note: There are also non-brewing locations of Great Divide Roadhouses in Lone Tree & Belmar but are not listed on CBL. This location only listed due to being the only remaining Denver location where Great Divide started. Original location at 2201 Arapahoe St opened May 1994 and closed 30 June 2025. New location is labeled as Offsite Brewing – all beers made at another facility.
