In 1996 author and poet, Pat Mora, learned of the holiday and realizing that the United States had nothing similar, decided to create a day that not only celebrates children but also literacy and bilingualism. A new holiday was born known as El día de los niños/El día de los libros. Since then, Book Fiestas have been held nationwide in April to celebrate "bookjoy" and the importance of literacy for all children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
