Join The Mahjong Lady, Jennie Mak, for an exciting introduction to Classic Hong Kong Style Mahjong—one of the most versatile and widely played versions of the game around the world. Mahjong, meaning “sparrow” in Chinese, is a game of strategy, skill, and a bit of luck. Originating in China, it spread internationally, evolving into different regional styles. This class offers an exciting introduction to Classic Hong Kong Style Mahjong—one of the most versatile and widely played versions of the game around the world. Learning this style provides a strong foundation, making it easier to explore other versions of mahjong, including those that use annually updated scorecards. What You’ll Learn: 🀄 The history and cultural significance of mahjong. 🀄 The fundamentals of Hong Kong Style gameplay, tile sets, and scoring. 🀄 Strategies to build winning hands, similar to Gin Rummy. 🀄 A fun, welcoming space to connect with the community and enjoy the game. All levels are welcome! Whether you're new to mahjong or looking to refine your skills, this class offers an engaging way to experience the game in its authentic form. This opportunity for cultural exchange is supported by the efforts of Mahjong United, an emerging community initiative dedicated to preserving and sharing the cultural heritage of mahjong while bringing people together through play. No supplies are needed, but if you have a set you're welcome to bring it. *** If you would like to request an accommodation, please contact dcplaccess@dc.gov at least one week prior to the program. *** This program is funded with support from the Friends of the Cleveland Park Library (FCPL). Thank you FRIENDS!
